Josh Williams (verified owner) –
Ah Battletech… a game of 10+ metre tall walking behemoths pummelling each other in a sci-fi backdrop with politics and treachery highly reminiscent of Game of Thrones.
This product has everything you need to get started. The Beginner’s Box is also worthy if you’re not quite sure and want a taste, but the true beginnings are here. This is a gritty 80s board/wargame of dice, multitudes of roll tables, in depth ‘Mech ‘character’ sheets and a tried & true system that will draw out the combat narrative of your games in deep simulation tradition.
Don’t come into Battletech expecting a fast game (unless you veer more towards the Alpha Strike product line, which turns it into a more traditional miniatures wargame). This is its own venerable beast with over 35 years of still relevant material that very much holds up to this day.
In the box you’ll find 8 pre-assembled and decently detailed plastic ‘Mech minis that give you a good range from light scout ‘Mechs to hulking near 100 tonne nightmares. You’ll also receive 8 cardboard punchout ‘Mechs of the same models, so you can easily share the experience with your friends without restrictions.
Inside you’ll also find two double sided map sheets, dice, cards, some cardboard terrain (2D), a rather good piece of short story fiction and a meaty rulebook that’ll get you rolling and stomping + 3 scenarios that are nicely re-playable with some advice on where to go from there.
So yes, Battletech. Slow, stompy, detailed and rich. If you decide to jump into the game then this product is an excellent beginning! Should you decide to go further in your Battletech journey then I recommend looking into Total Warfare – the seminal rulebook that includes the full rules with combined arms warfare incorporated. And that’s not to mention the wealth of lore, well written fiction and gaming material that could even see you and your friends waging a campaign across entire solar systems… or you can simply stick to small, fun skirmishes between ‘Mechs. The choice is entirely yours!
Great product. Luck to you and your fellow MechWarriors out on the battlefield.
